About Me

I began my career working for Walt Disney Feature Animation as a storyboard artist. I got to help develop stories as well as draw all day! I spent 12 years at Disney and worked on many films, including HERCULES, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, GNOMEO AND JULIET, ATLANTIS, TARZAN, and THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE. I worked as a story artist, a head of story, and later, as a director. I hold a degree in animation from Cal Arts.

Later, I left Disney and pursued writing full time. I had dabbled in children's book writing for years, and it was a joy to attend Vermont College to earn a Master's degree in Writing For Children and Young Adults.

I have since written and published four books. Two of my picture books are with Harpercollins. My two novels-in-verse are with Candlewick Press.

I still write full time and I teach, as well. I often teach for writers dot com, offering classes in both picture book writing and crafting the novel-in-verse (sometimes called a poetry novel.) Please check out writers dot com to see when I will be teaching my next class!

I live in Georgia with my husband and children, and I enjoy writing, photography, reading, movies, hiking, and traveling.

When I was in the Master's program at Vermont, I learned the value of working closely with an author.
